
The “How” and the “Why” of Learning
You might think learning is simply a matter of reading a book and remembering the facts for an exam, but it is far more sophisticated than that. It is a psychological ballet. To understand how you learn, we have to look at the giants whose shoulders we stand upon.
The Architects of Action – Thorndike and Skinner
Let’s start with the ‘Mechanics.’ I’m talking about Behaviourism.
First, we have Edward Thorndike. He gave us the ‘Law of Effect.’ Essentially, Thorndike argued that if a response is followed by a satisfying outcome, the connection is strengthened. He spent a great deal of time with cats in puzzle boxes. If the cat accidentally hit the lever and got a piece of fish, it learned to hit the lever. Simple, yes? Trial and error.
Then comes B.F. Skinner, who took this a step further with Operant Conditioning. Skinner wasn’t interested in what was happening inside the mind – he called that a ‘black box’ and found it far too messy to deal with. He focused on reinforcement. Positive reinforcement (giving a gold star for a tidy essay) or negative reinforcement (removing a tedious chore because you’ve behaved). In Skinner’s world, we are essentially shaped by the consequences of our actions. If it’s rewarded, we do it again. If it’s punished, we stop. A bit clinical, perhaps, but you’ll see it in every primary school in the country.
The Internal Map – Jean Piaget
Now, by the mid-century, people realised that humans aren’t just pigeons in boxes. Enter Jean Piaget.
Piaget moved us into Cognitive Theory. He viewed the child as a ‘little scientist.’ He argued that we don’t just react to stimuli; we actively construct our understanding of the world. He gave us the concept of Schemas – mental filing cabinets. When we encounter new information, we either assimilate it into an existing folder or accommodate it by creating a brand new folder.
Piaget insisted that children go through fixed stages of development. You cannot teach a five-year-old abstract quantum physics because their cognitive ‘hardware’ simply isn’t installed yet. It’s a developmental march.
The Social Bridge – Lev Vygotsky
However, Piaget was a bit of a loner in his theory. Lev Vygotsky came along and said, ‘Hold on a moment; we are social creatures!’
Vygotsky’s Constructivism (or Social Constructivism) posits that learning happens first on a social level and then on an individual level. His most vital contribution is the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).
Imagine a task is too hard for you to do alone, but you can do it with a bit of help from me – your teacher. That ‘sweet spot’ between what you can do alone and what you cannot do at all is the ZPD. My job is to provide scaffolding—temporary support that I gradually remove as you become competent. In short: we learn through interaction.
The Mirror and the Mountain – Bandura and Maslow
Now, let’s look at the human element – motivation and observation.
First, Albert Bandura. He bridged the gap between behaviourism and cognitivism with Social Learning Theory. He famously used the ‘Bobo Doll’ experiment to show that children don’t need a reward to learn; they simply need to observe. We learn by modelling. If you see me drinking a cup of tea while I read Dickens, you might decide that is the sophisticated way to approach literature. We observe, we retain, and we replicate.
Then, we have Abraham Maslow. Maslow wasn’t interested in how you process a verb; he was interested in why you bother to learn at all. His Hierarchy of Needs is a pyramid. At the bottom are physiological needs (food, water) and safety. If you’ve come to school today without breakfast or you’re feeling unsafe at home, you are stuck at the bottom of the pyramid. You cannot reach ‘Self-Actualisation’ – the peak where true learning happens – if your basic needs aren’t met. It’s a reminder that the heart must be settled before the head can work.
The Digital Web – Siemens and Downes
And finally, we bring ourselves to the modern era. Everything I’ve mentioned so far assumes that knowledge resides inside the person. But in the age of the internet, is that still true?
George Siemens and Stephen Downes proposed Connectivism. They argue that learning is no longer just an internal, individualistic act. Instead, learning is the process of connecting ‘nodes’ – people, databases, social media, textbooks.
In Connectivism, the ability to find information is more important than the ability to store it. Your ‘knowledge’ is actually your network. If I don’t know the answer to a question, but I know exactly which forum or expert to ask, I have ‘learned’ how to navigate the network. It is a theory for the digital age, where the web is our collective brain.
Closing Remarks
You might ask which one is correct. All of them and none of them. A good teacher—and a clever student—uses a bit of all these. We use Skinner for discipline, Maslow for empathy, Vygotsky for guidance, and Connectivism to survive the 21st century.
